What Action Can I Take?

It's very easy to change the way you live. Just a few small changes can help protect the landscape and environment for the future.

At home, every time you turn on lights, use your computer or watch TV you are using electricity.

Electricity is made by burning fossil fuels - coal, gas and oil. When fossil fuels are burnt they release carbon dioxide, which is one of the causes global warming.

There are many small things you can do at home to reduce your use of electricity and also reduce your use of the earth's resources.

Reduce Your Use Of Electricity

  • Don't leave lights on when you leave a room
  • Don't leave your TV on stand-by
  • Don't leave your CD player on when you leave your bedroom

Reduce Your Use Of The Earth's Resources

  • Use recycled printer paper and use both sides of printer paper
  • Encourage your parents to start a compost bin and compost fruit and vegetable peelings for your garden
  • Recycle magazines and newspapers
  • Put a water saving device in your toilet cistern to save water
  • Use energy saving lightbulbs

Encourage Wildlife To Your Garden

  • Put up a bird feeder with bread and nuts in your garden
  • Place old dead wood in a shaded area of the garden to attract insects and minibeasts to your garden

At School

  • Avoid using foil or sandwich bags with your lunch. Pack your lunch in an old ice-cream tub or lunch box to avoiding unneccessary packaging
