- 1. Compost your kitchen and garden waste: as well as fruit and vegetable peelings you can compost egg cartons, coffee grounds and teabags. Up to 2/3rds of food that each household throws away could be composted.
- 2. Install low energy light bulbs: they can last 10 times longer than normal light bulbs, keep the equivalent of half a ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere in their lifetime and they save you money!
- 3.Turn down your thermostat be 1oC! This could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent and save you around £40 per year.
- 4. Use water wisely: 1/3rd of all household water is flushed down the loo. Put a "hippo" in the cistern or install a dual flush mechanism
- 5. Consider the food that you buy: £424 worth of food is thrown away by each person in the UK every year, that's enough to buy 530 loaves of bread. Imagine throwing them in the bin!
- 6. Buy fewer newspapers: 26 million trees are used every year just to produce the Sunday newspapers. That's equivalent to a forest the size of Bristol being cut down every week
- 7. Switch to an ecological washing powder: If the whole country did this we would eliminate the equivalent of 700,000 tons of detergent from our sewage plants and waterways each year.
- 8. Reduce your rubbish: stop your junk mail by sending your name and address to: The Mailing Preference Service, Freepost 22, London W1E 7EZ
- 9. Buy fairtrade products and help farmers in the developing world get a better deal.
- 10. Eat local produce: You can cut your food mile related greenhouse emissions by 90%.
