Farming Facts
- In medieval times, each parish had an area of open fields divided into narrow strips, plus areas of woodland, of hay meadows and of common grazing land.
- Agriculture now uses around three quarters of this country's land area.
- During the two World Wars, the slopes of the Wittenham Clumps were ploughed up to provide extra land for growing food.· The number of people employed in UK farming has dropped from 616,000 in 1996 to 541,000 in 2005.
- In the future, farmers will grow more crops such as maize or sunflowers which are suited to a warmer climate, as well as biofuel crops such as wood coppice and oilseed rape.
