- Few good building stones occur locally, so older buildings are often built of wood and brick, with thatched roofs. But the Thames Valley is a good source of sand and gravel, used in concrete for roads and buildings.
- Within sight of the Wittenham Clumps, at the Culham Research Centre, international scientists have been researching a new and safe form of renewable energy produced by nuclear fusion.

- The Environment Agency website can tell you which areas of your neighbourhood are prone to flooding.
- The Northmoor Trust maintains a research programme investigating which types of broadleaf trees will be most adaptable to a changing UK climate. The Trust offices were built with local timber.
