New Crops

Some landowners around Little Wittenham started to explore new crops options.

  • In Little Wittenham village, Sires Hill and Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, fruit growing (apple orchards and soft fruit) developed since the late 19th century. Many of these orchards have since become uneconomical and abandoned.
  • The Brightwell vineyard (planted from 1988) indicates that crops associated with more southerly countries may now be viable here.

Many small enterprises now sell their produce online or through local farmers markets.
