Future of Transport

What could replace the fossil fuel we use in our cars, trucks, ships and planes?

Car Engines
In the short term, substantial progress is being made with the fuel efficiency of car engines. Biofuels, derived from plants, are likely to be an increased component of transport fuels in coming years.

Biofuels
Ethanol is produced by fermenting sugars from cane or beet,.
Bio-diesel is derived from sunflower oil or oil seed rape.

Vegetable Oil
Northmoor Trusts Wild Waste Bus runs on vegetable oil, and the countrys first filling station supplying used vegetable oil has opened nearby at Milton Park, Didcot.

Solar Energy
Solar energy has potential for powering boats and planes. A solar-powered passenger boat has been operating for several years on the Norfolk Broads. The first solar-powered round-the-world flight is expected in 2010 to demonstrate the potential of non-polluting flight.

Nuclear Power
Nuclear power has been used to power submarines and some other large vessels for decades.
