The Dunch family and The Manor

William Dunch, MP for Wallingford, acquired the manor in Little Wittenham in 1552.

His family occupied the site for the next 170 years.

The Dunch family developed the estate and created the ornamental parkland estate on the northern side of The Clumps.

The last of the Dunches to live at the manor was the renowned gambler, Edmumd Dunch. Edmund lost the whole property to James II who said he could only have it back if he gave up gambling!

Edmund died in 1719 and the estate was inherited by his three daughters and their husbands. Sir Henry Oxenden acquired the whole estate in 1766.

After the death of Sir Henry Oxenden in 1779, the estate pased through several owners.
