Gotta Leisure Complex
Wittenham Clumps has been a destination for people to enjoy the countryside for generations. However, with increasing populations in the area, an increasing amount of time for leisure pursuits and more varied ways to spend it the Clumps are being put under increasing pressure. As well as being a local playground, the Clumps are comprised of a diverse range of habitats, some of which accommodate rare species. This activity is designed to encourage students to identify ways in which a limited resource and environment can be put under pressure through increasing and, potentially, conflicting demands for leisure and conservation. Students will become aware that it is possible to manage the environment and the different leisure pursuits so that as many different ‘parties’ can be accommodated. Ultimately, the students will need to appreciate that there is no right or wrong way to use or manage the Clumps but that each strategy will have advantages and disadvantages and that heritage management is a dynamic process.
Settlers!
Taking on the role of a tribe of Bronze Age settlers, small groups of students investigate the strengths and weaknesses of 5 sites their scouts have identified to build their new home. Starting by discussing various types of settlement using our 4x2.5m aerial photograph of the area surrounding Little Wittenham, students then progress out into the field to explore the 5 locations. In their tribes, students need to decide what is going to be the best location for their tribe and to give their reasons. The location should reflect a long-term strategy where the population is growing and so are their needs. Students are encouraged to draw maps and plans of how the settlement will look. Students are then split up and each member of a tribe joins with other members of the different tribes and they then need to persuade the other tribe members to come and join them and settle in their preferred location.
Housing Estate or Mistake?
This activity is designed to encourage students to understand how to construct a field investigation in preparation for their own coursework. Students are encouraged to think about the different fieldwork techniques, their limitations and appropriateness for making an informed decision. Working in groups students will take on the role of council advisers within the planning department. They will need to assess if a major housing development should go ahead in the area of Little Wittenham. In order to make this judgement, the students will need to design and carry out a series of field based activities in order to derive a set of data which they will need to interpret in the form of a report to be submitted to the council. As well as considering what primary data they need, students will also need to consider the role that secondary data plays and which sources would be useful in supporting their research.
