Carbon Reduction

Take Action

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Carbon Footprint is a measure of greenhouse gases produced, and the environmental impact, by human activities.

Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions which contribute to global warming. Every time you make a coffee or turn the television on you are adding to global warming.

Simple things YOU can do to start reducing your contribution to global warming - and in fact save you money too!

Around The Home

  • Turn it off when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, stereo, computer etc)
  • Turn down the central heating slightly (try just 1 or 2 o C)
  • Fill your dishwasher and washing machine with a full load
  • Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need
  • Unplug your mobile phone as soon as it's fully charged.
  • Go for a run rather than driving to the gym
  • Fit energy-saving lightbulbs
  • Insulate your loft, water tank and walls. 35% of heat generated in the house is lost through the walls.
  • Sign up to a green energy supplier. Start using electricity from renewable sources (e.g. wind and hydroelectric power) and reduce your carbon footprint from electricity to zero.

Transport

  • Car share to work
  • Walk with children to school rather than driving
  • Use bus, train or cycle rather than driving.
  • Walk - rather than drive - for short journeys to the newsagents or corner shop
  • Take the ferry or channel tunnel instead of flying to France

Shopping
Many of the food and wine we consume has travelled thousands of miles to reach your kitchen. Try to reduce your carbon footprint by buying locally produced goods.

  • Buy local fruit and vegetables.
  • Buy clothes and products produced close to home (check the labels for items made in India or China)
  • Buy local wine rather than Australia or South African
